(La Porte County, IN) - A police officer was shot this morning at Franciscan Health hospital outside Michigan City. It occurred during a reported active shooter situation. An arrest has reportedly been made.
So far, La Porte County Police revealed that Indiana State Police is the lead agency in the investigation at the request of Sheriff Ron Heeg. No further details were released.
Cody Looney of New Buffalo said he was driving to work when he spotted numerous police vehicles and fire trucks on their way to the hospital then at the hospital near Interstate 94.
“All of the vehicles were driving at least double the speed limit to get there. They definitely had the hospital surrounded,” he said.
Franciscan Health released the following statement.
“The health and safety of our patients and staff is always our top priority. There is no active threat to patients, staff or the community at this time. The emergency department remains on ambulance bypass, but walk-in patients are being accepted through the main entrance to the hospital. Franciscan Physician Network medical offices on site are closed at this time. All other services and departments remain open as normal.”
