OWI Driver Nearly Hits Police Officer

(La Porte, IN) - A La Porte police officer arrested a driver for alleged impairment after the vehicle nearly struck him.

Jackie Gilley, Jr. is charged in La Porte Circuit Court with Level 6 felony operating while intoxicated and reckless driving, a Class C misdemeanor.

Police said the officer on May 16 clocked Gilley at 66 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone in the area of McClung Road and East Shore Parkway.  Gilley was also spotted veering over the center line, which caused the officer to swerve to his right to avoid a collision.

During a traffic stop, police said Gilley told the officer he had been drinking while playing golf and later at a bar then at home.  He was attempting to locate a bar when pulled over.

His alleged blood alcohol level was slightly above two times the legal limit.

According to court records, Gilley was sentenced to six months on probation for operating while intoxicated in 2024.
