Storm Topples Trees and Power Lines

(La Porte County, IN) - There are thousands of power outages remaining from yesterday’s storm that brought high winds.

According to NIPSCO, over 4,000 customers in its La Porte service territory were without power this morning and so were more than 2,600 customers in the Michigan City area.

The high winds also toppled numerous trees.

In the unincorporated areas of La Porte County, Commissioner Steve Holifield said there were over 80 fallen trees and numerous power lines down at one point during the storm.  He said the high winds kicked in suddenly.

“The thunderstorm disappeared.  It stopped.  We were calm for a few minutes and then the winds changed direction from the west to straight out of the east and it just blew like hell,” he said.

Mayor Tom Dermody said there were also a number of fallen trees in the city, including some that fell on homes.

La Porte resident Mike Kellems said there were trees down in various areas like the Island next to Pine Lake where trees came to rest on two homes without causing substantial damage.

Currently, NIPSCO is dealing with close to 30,000 power outages throughout its northern Indiana service territory.

Indiana Michigan Power Company reports nearly 400 customers without power this morning in the New Carlisle, Rolling Prairie, Springville and New Buffalo areas.
