Fire Hydrant Flushing Begins in April

(La Porte, IN) - The annual flushing of fire hydrants in La Porte is scheduled to start in a few weeks.

According to the mayor’s office, the flushing is scheduled to begin on April 12 and take four to five weeks to complete.  The flushing will occur every Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Water Department Superintendent Tim Werner said the flushing is a critical part of maintaining the city’s water quality and infrastructure.

“We know it can be an inconvenience to residents, but it is an important part of making sure our infrastructure is primed to continue high-quality water service both now and in the future,” he said.

Werner said discolored or rusty looking water may occur in some areas during the flushing but the water is safe to drink but may affect clothing in washing machines. To avoid staining clothes, Werner said residents should check their water before doing laundry. Should clothes have some staining, avoid drying and call the Water Department for free rust removing solution.

Residents with questions can contact the Water Department at 219-326-9540.
