Access to Mount Baldy Disrupted Until Summer

(Michigan City, IN) – Officials with Indiana Dunes National Park have released the following details regarding ongoing work affecting access to Mount Baldy:

The Mount Baldy Access Site will be closed from late March through mid-June, 2026, while the National Park Service carries out an important sand management and shoreline stabilization project. Over time, windblown sand has buried portions of Mount Baldy’s parking area and sanitary infrastructure. This work will help protect those facilities and maintain long term visitor access to this popular site.

Crews will move approximately 40,000 cubic yards of sand from and nearby the buried parking area and relocate it to Crescent Beach, where it will support shoreline/beach nourishment efforts in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. No natural dune habitat or archaeological resources will be disturbed during this project.

Visitors can expect localized closures around the Mount Baldy Access Site and occasional truck traffic or brief access limitations at Crescent Beach during sand placement. We appreciate your patience as we safeguard access and infrastructure at this iconic park destination and strengthen shoreline resilience along Lake Michigan. Visitors are encouraged to explore other beach areas within the park during this closure.
