Boost in Fund Raising for Lakefront Playground

(Michigan City, IN) - Plans for a large lakefront playground expected to be a regional destination has moved a step closer to construction in Michigan City.

The city council has unanimously approved $600,000 toward the $5 million projected cost of the Fedder’s Alley All-Inclusive Playground and Fitness Park.  The money coming out of the city’s Riverboat Fund is in addition to the close to $3.9 million previously secured through a combination of local, state, federal and private sources.

The playground will feature equipment for people of all ages and abilities.

“Fedder’s Alley and the surrounding shoreline have long been a gathering place for our community.  Now, we’re investing in that space for the future where children parents and grandparents of all abilities can play, connect and share the joy of our park together for generations to come,” said Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch.

She said it’ll be the only such lakefront playground in Northwest Indiana.  The park will also feature fitness stations, a paved walking trail and gathering places.

“In many of our communities, children with disabilities face challenges that can prevent them from engaging in this essential aspect of childhood. Our playground was thoughtfully designed with one core principle in mind. Everyone, regardless of ability, should have the opportunity to play,” said Park Department Superintendent Shannon Eason.

Construction is anticipated to begin sometime this year.  Donations can be given by contacting the Unity Foundation of La Porte County or the park department office.
