Bond Reduction Sought in Suspected Murder Plot

(Michigan City, IN) - A Michigan City man accused of being at a church with bombs to kill a parishioner is still being held in the La Porte County Jail on $100,000 bond.

 

A hearing is scheduled March 31st in La Porte Superior Court 1 for a judge to decide his request to lower the amount of his bail. 

 

Matthew Schutz, 41, had his initial court hearing last week on charges that include attempted murder.  On March 11, authorities said the man went to Full Gospel Church in Michigan City on a report that Schutz wanted kill a church parishioner seated several rows in front of the suspect.

 

Acting on a tip, police went there and searched Schutz, who was allegedly found in possession of five cylinder shaped objects with wicks in his pockets.  According to authorities, a woman through a text message notified the male parishioner that Schutz was on his way to the church to kill him.

 

She identified Schutz as her husband, who had a still active protective order sought by the woman against him  

 

It’s alleged Schutz made the bombs at his residence after materials used to make explosives were found inside his residence, police said.  Schutz was given a trial date of August 17.
