Semi Blown Over by High Winds

(La Porte County, IN) - Gusty winds today are causing power outages from fallen trees and utility poles.

A semi truck and trailer were also blown over late this morning between Westville and Wanatah on U.S. 421 near 800 South.  La Porte County Emergency Management Director Rob Sabie said the overturned trailer was blocking both lanes of the highway, but a tow truck was there to upright and haul away the semi.  “They’re going to try and upright the semi to get it out of the way,” he said.

U.S. 421 was closed between U.S 6 to U.S. 30.  Sabie said another tractor trailer blew over this morning on Indiana 39 near Union Mills, but that rig came to rest off the highway.  The trailers on both semis were not hauling any cargo.

NIPSCO reports more than 800 power outages late this morning in its La Porte service territory and over 300 in the Michigan City area while over 160 customers in the Mill Creek area were still without power.

According to NIPSCO, the over 500 outages in its Westville service territory early morning were down to less than 20.

La Porte County Police reported sustained winds of more than 30 miles per hour with gusts of up to 54 miles per hour.
