Major Impairment Alleged in Serious Injury Crash

(La Porte County, IN) - A woman who seriously injured a man in a head-on collision outside La Porte was extremely impaired by alcohol and possibly marijuana.

Those are among the latest details obtained from the Sunday night crash on Indiana 2 just west of County Road 100 South.

Mackenzie Miller, 21, is charged in La Porte Circuit Court with Level 5 felony operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury.  She hit Franklin Lile, 47, of Wanatah.

La Porte County Police said he was unconscious after the collision and airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

According to court documents, Lile, who’s employed at the La Porte County Highway Department, was still in a coma and on a respirator Monday with a brain injury.

Police said the collision occurred after the Walkerton woman veered across the center line, striking the oncoming vehicle head-on.

According to court documents, Miller told investigators she dropped off her two year old son at his father’s house and was traveling to a friend’s house when the collision happened.

She admitted to consuming alcohol and using a marijuana vape pen before the crash, authorities said.  Miller was treated at a local hospital and later booked into the La Porte County Jail where she was being held on $15,000 bond.

She could face anywhere from a one to six year sentence.
