Dispensary Marijuana Leads to Jail Time

(La Porte County, IN) - A Chicago woman wound up behind bars after allegedly found in the Michigan City area with dispensary marijuana.

La Porte County Police said the woman was pulled over during the afternoon on Sunday for traveling 10 to 15 miles per hour below the speed limit on Indiana 212 along with erratic lane movement.  During the traffic stop, police said an officer detected an odor of marijuana.

In response, police said the driver, Uylanda Gaston, admitted there was marijuana inside a bag on her front passenger seat.  Initially, she didn’t want to hand the bag over to the officer, saying she purchased the marijuana in Michigan and was heading back to Illinois.

Marijuana can be legally purchased from dispensaries in both states.

However, when informed marijuana was still against the law in Indiana, Gaston gave the officer the bag containing more than two ounces of the leafy substance in two separate packages, police said.   The bag contained the name of a dispensary along U.S. 12 a few miles west of the New Buffalo city limits.

Gaston, who was booked into the La Porte County Jail, could face an up to six month jail sentence on the Class B misdemeanor offense.
