(Michigan City, IN) - A designated non-smoking area at the beach in Washington Park is being proposed.
At this week’s Michigan City Park and Recreation Board meeting, Parks Superintendent Shannon Eason said the 200 foot wide area in front of the lifeguard stations would be marked with signs.
“I would hope it would draw families to that area,” she said.
Vaping would also not be allowed in the proposed designated non-smoking area. Some park board members expressed concern how people violating the rule would respond if asked to stop. Resident Scott Melon doesn’t feel that should not be an issue since there aren’t as many smokers and restrictions on smoking in society in general began in the 1970’s.
“We’re worried about a fraction of a fraction of a percent who are going to be unruly when we’re to attract out of towners and people with families,” he said.
The board decided to consider the matter again at some point in the future.
