Drop in Gunfire Reports

(Michigan City, IN) - Reports of gunshots fired went down last month in Michigan City.

 

 

 

 

 

The number of shots fired complaints from January and February went from 31 to 23, Michigan City Police Chief Steve Forker told the city council last night.  Forker said most of the shots fired reports last month at 7 were in the city’s Third Ward.

 

Police in Michigan City have focused on reducing gun violence the past few years and it could be working based on crime statistics compiled by the department.  Shots fired complaints throughout the entire city dropped from 502 in 2023 to 417 the following year.

 

The number of murders dropped from eight in 2020 to three in 2024.  There were nine non-fatal shootings in 2024 compared to 24 in 2020.
