Shortage Brings Salt Supply Challenges

(Michigan City, IN) - Officials in Michigan City are using salt more efficiently on the roads to stretch lower than normal supplies.

A winter salt shortage has Michigan City and some other communities in the region not spreading as much salt when temperatures are below 15 degrees since salt becomes much less effective in colder weather.

More of a focus during the bitter cold has been on plowing, traction management at key locations and targeted treatment when conditions allow, according to the mayor’s office.

Officials said the city received a fresh load of salt to replenish supplies last week.   Another load delivery soon was expected.

The city remains in close coordination with neighboring municipalities and state partners to monitor conditions and ensure continuity of operations, officials said.
