Lake Effect Follows Storm System Snow

(La Porte County, IN) - The amount of lake effect snow from overnight ranges from a few inches to a foot or more in areas east of La Porte.

About a foot of fresh snow during the night was reported in the New Carlisle area.  Kayla Tharp said it took her about 30 minutes to drive from her home in in La Porte to where she works at The Diner in New Carlisle.  Normally, she said it’s a 15 to 20 minute trip.

“The drive was pretty ice.  At times, it was all mush and stuff until the plows went out,” she said.

La Porte Street Department Supervisor Ian Eldridge estimated about three inches of lake effect snow came down overnight in the city along with another six to eight inches of snow from a storm system that passed through the area over the weekend.

“The roads are getting cleaned off pretty good.  They’re in decent shape right now,” he said.

Michigan City resident Bob Johnson said he received about the same amount of overnight snow as La Porte.  He said there was also some drifting caused by the winds making travel a little more treacherous.
