County Employees Ordered into Driving Course

(La Porte County, IN) - Anyone driving a La Porte County government owned vehicle will have to take a defense driving course.  The action was taken last night by the La Porte County Commissioners.

County Attorney Guy Di Martino made the recommendation to avoid a potential increase in auto insurance rates due to a recent poor driving history involving county owned vehicles.   He said the insurance company recently mentioned the “poor history” and suggested the defensive driving course.  “I think it’s something we want to do especially because we’re going to be coming up for renewal in May,” he said.

Not just employees but elected officials with a county owned vehicle will have to take a defensive driving course.  County Commission President Steve Holifield said the insurance company frowned at two collisions involving county vehicles within about five weeks of each other by the same driver.  “There’s no charge to the county. It’s just something the insurance company wants us to take,” he said.
