Lakers Rebound After First Loss of Season

(La Porte, IN) - La Lumiere suffered its first loss of the basketball season in a nationally televised game during the 5th annual La Porte Invitational at the historic Civic Auditorium.

The Lakers rebounded by winning their final two games of the three day competition featuring some of the best college prep teams and talent in the nation.

La Lumiere opened the competition on January 9 with a 67-60 loss to Long Island Lutheran in a game televised by FOX Sports 1. The Lakers, who were ranked No. 7 in the nation going into the competition, defeated CATS Academy 81-62 the next evening.

Junior Devin Cleveland, a transfer student from Chicago, led the way for the Lakers with 18 points while Ferlandes Wright, a junior from Louisville, added 17 points and nine rebounds.  Jonathan Sanderson, who signed to play next season at the University of Notre Dame, contributed 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

La Lumiere on Sunday beat Sunrise Christian Academy 68-49.  A 13-2 run for the Lakers during the second half was the difference maker in the game.

Senior Jacob Webber, who’s committed to play at Purdue University next season, finished with 24 points that included six three point buckets out of eight attempts.  Wright and Cleveland added 16 and 15 points apiece.

Head Coach Pat Holmes credited more effective ball movement and passing to open shooters for the two victories.

"I was proud of how our guys responded. For us to be at our best, we have to distribute the ball. In both wins we had 22 and 19 assists, respectively," he said.
