Insight on Alleged Teen Shooter Facing Adult Charges

(Michigan City, IN) - A 16 year old boy is being prosecuted as an adult for the recent shooting of another teenager in Michigan City.

Darrien Washington is charged in La Porte Superior Court 1 with Level 2 felony attempted robbery; Level 3 felony aggravated battery and dangerous possession of a firearm by a minor, a Class A misdemeanor.

Police said Washington tried robbing another teenager Saturday then shot him at Canterbury Apartments near Pahs Rd. close to Michigan City High School.

The male victim was taken to nearby Franciscan Health with a single gunshot wound and later transferred to another hospital for further treatment, police said.

According to court documents, it appears the victim agreed to purchase a gun from Washington, who showed up with several individuals also armed.  However, the victim was tackled to the ground by Washington, whose plan could have been to actually steal the money the boy showed up with to buy the firearm and keep the gun, according to court documents.

Police said the boy was running away from the individuals when shot in the right buttocks.

La Porte County Prosecutor Sean Fagan said Washington’s alleged actions were alarming enough for him decide to charge him as an adult instead of a juvenile.

“It’s the seriousness of the crime,” he said.

Washington could face anywhere from a 10 to 30 year sentence on the attempted robbery charge along with two to 12 years on the aggravated battery count.

He's currently being held in the La Porte County Juvenile Services Center on $50,000 bond.
