(Porter County, IN) - A local lawmaker has joined the call to improve access to Indiana Dunes State Park.
State Senator Rodney Pol Jr. (D) has signed a letter to state transportation officials supporting a request by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to add a second entrance to the park.
Pol represents parts of La Porte County, including Michigan City and Westville.
The proposed entrance would involve the extension of Tremont Rd to U.S. 12, giving both visitors and emergency responders better access.
The DNR reports that just under 2 million people visited Indiana Dunes State Park in 2024, a record number. The combined attraction of the State Park and the Indiana Dunes National Park generated $236 million in direct spending and $135 million in total economic impact to the region.
