(La Porte, IN) - The mayors of La Porte and Michigan City will try to outdo each other in ringing the bell for the Salvation Army during its annual Christmas fund raising campaign.
The friendly competition held annually in recent years is scheduled Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mayor Tom Dermody and his team from La Porte along with Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch and her team will staff a red kettle in their respective communities to see who can raise the most funds.
The Dermody team will be outside Kroger during the competition while the Deuitch and her helpers will be at Al’s Supermarket on Karwick Road. In addition, each mayor will have a red kettle at City Hall along with virtual red kettles for people to donate online.
Online donations for Michigan City can be made at donate.salvationarmyindiana.org/MayorAngieMC.
Contributions online for La Porte can be made at donate.salvationarmyindiana.org/MayorTomLP.
“We see firsthand the growing needs among local families, and we are incredibly grateful to both Mayor Angie and Mayor Tom for stepping up once again to help raise critical funds,” said Major Dale Simmons, who operates the Salvation Army branches in Michigan City and La Porte with help from his wife, Becky.
Funds raised this time of year help provide food and toys to hundreds of local families during the holidays, and also support year-round services including food pantries, weekend backpack programs, diaper assistance, summer camp, spiritual care and case management.
Community members who wish to volunteer as bell ringers may sign up in either Michigan City or La Porte by visiting www.RegisterToRing.com.
