La Porte Family Lights Up Neighborhood

(La Porte, IN) - A La Porte family has turned their house into a holiday light show.

Mike and Kim Schoner live in a ranch house at the corner of Collins and Nowak Drive, which right now is a giant movie screen displaying Christmas magic.

“We’re using high-definition laser technology to project a light show on our house,” Mike told HTNN. “We have six different sets of songs with a variety that I think would appeal to young kids through adults.”

To enjoy sounds with the sights, passersby can tune their radios to 88.9 FM. Schoner says the entire show lasts 30 minutes.

Looking at the display, one would assume Mike has a background in multimedia technology, but he says that’s not so. “I have no background in this,” said Schoner with a chuckle. “I’ve been looking at this technology for quite a few years and seen other people do it.”

Schoner says the display has been up for about a week and is growing in popularity. “Most nights we can even be found outside in our car, waiting for people to clear out to pull into our garage.” But the Schoners don’t mind. They like watching the show as much as anyone. They only ask that observers stay respectful of neighbors and refrain from blocking other driveways.

The display runs Sundays through Thursdays from 5-10 pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5-11. Collins Drive is just south of CR 250 South, east of the La Porte Airport.

This is the family’s first attempt at a holiday attraction, and they say they intend to build on it. “I think it’s good this year,” Mike said, “but it’s only going to get better from here on out.”

The Schoners will run the Christmas show through January 1. They also plan to have festive displays for the 4th of July and Halloween next year.
