(La Porte County, IN) - A local church has given money to help people without a home stay warm at night.
Westville United Methodist Church donated $5,000 to Nest Community Shelter, which runs overnight shelters in Michigan City and La Porte. The money came from the sale of goods at the church’s resale shop. Pastor Tony Guill said the monetary donation comes after the church gave food, coats and gloves to the organization the past three years.
Harry Holtkamp, Executive Director of Nest Community Shelter, appeared taken back by the latest gift. “I’m so grateful and thankful. I’m floored,” he said. Nest Community Shelter with an annual budget of more than $400,000 operates strictly on donations and grants.
Lately, Holtkamp said the shelter in La Porte has served as many as 20 people a night while the one in Michigan City has been accommodating more than 30 people a night.
