(Michigan City, IN) - Michigan City Police is among the law enforcement agencies nationwide beefing up patrols to try and keep traveling safe during the holidays.
The department is partnering with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the annual effort. The campaign from now until the end of the month is focusing on impaired driving, aggressive driving and seat belt violations.
Officers are working overtime to conduct sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. “By buckling up, slowing down, and never driving impaired, we can all help make Indiana’s roads safer this season,” said Douglas Huntsinger, Executive Director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute
According to NHTSA, alcohol-impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes, especially during the holiday season and failure to wear a seat belt continues to be one of the most preventable causes of death on the road.
Motorists are encouraged to call 911 to report unsafe or impaired drivers. For more safety tips, visit www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office and La Porte Police are among the other local law enforcement agencies taking part in the effort.
