Otis Honored by Basketball Hall of Fame

(New Castle, IN) - A former La Porte High School basketball standout is being honored by the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Nick Otis has been named to the 2026 Silver Anniversary Team. Every year the Hall honors the state’s best high school basketball players from 25 years before. Otis joins 17 other players from the Class of 2001.

As a senior at La Porte, Otis averaged over 20 points and nearly 8 rebounds per game, racking up 924 points over his high school career. The 6-foot-4 guard scored a career-high 37 points against South Bend Riley on Nov. 22, 2000. He was named 2001 AP high honorable mention All-State, 2001 IBCA third-team Senior All-State, 2001 South Bend Tribune first-team All-Area and two-time first-team all-Duneland Conference. He also was selected to the 2000 Junior All-Stars and played in the 2001 South Bend area All-Star Game and the 2001 North/South Indiana All-Star Classic.

Otis went on to play at Belmont University for four years, where he totaled 477 points, 175 rebounds and 110 assists in 110 games for teams that went 63-54 over four seasons. He averaged 5.1 points and 1.4 rebounds as a junior for a 21-9 team that played in the 2004 NIT.

Following a successful basketball career, Otis turned his attention to law, graduating, magna cum laude, from Valparaiso University in 2008.  He is now a managing partner for Newby Lewis Kaminski & Jones LLP of La Porte and serves as the La Porte City Attorney. In 2014, Otis founded the annual La Porte Turkey Trot 5K, held each year on Thanksgiving Day with proceeds benefiting the La Porte Educational Development Foundation.

Silver Anniversary Team members will be honored at an awards banquet on March 18 in Indianapolis. Prior to the banquet, a midday reception, free and open to the public, will be held at the Hall of Fame Museum in New Castle.
