Man Convicted in Slaying of Girlfriend

(La Porte, IN) - A La Porte man has been convicted of fatally shooting his girlfriend.

John McCaw, 65, was found guilty of murder during a bench trial in La Porte Circuit Court.

According to authorities, he shot Nancy Ainsworth, 57, through a pillow at her residence in August of 2022 in the 900 block of Ridge St. and tried covering up his role in the murder.

A suicide note portrayed to be from the victim in his writing was recovered from the home.  He also called 911 after leaving the residence and reported Ainsworth shot herself, authorities said.

“I want to thank by talented deputies Autumn Ferch, Katie Arnold and Cody Luke for bringing this case to a successful outcome,” said La Porte County Prosecutor Sean Fagan.

Fagan also credited the La Porte Police Department for providing the evidence that allowed the allegations to be proven.

McCaw could face anywhere from a 45 to 65 year sentence.  Sentencing is expected later this month.
