(Michigan City, IN) - Sentencing is scheduled for a man who admitted to a fatal shooting in the Michigan City area.
Dawson Mahoney, 24, recently pleaded guilty in La Porte Superior Court 1 to voluntary manslaughter for the 2023 death of Travis Clemons in the 8600 block of W. 400 North.
Police said Mahoney stepped outside a home and fired multiple rounds at a vehicle occupied by Clemons. In response, Clemons stepped out of the vehicle and was hit with at least one of five additional gunshots, police said.
A motive has not been revealed.
Mahoney agreed to a 24 year prison sentence in exchange for the plea, which calls for a murder charge against him to be dismissed.
The sentencing range for murder is 45 to 65 years. The terms of the plea agreement were taken under advisement by Judge Jamie Oss, who will sentence Mahoney on January 8 if she accepts the guilty plea.
