(Michigan City, IN) - Holiday shopping at the Michigan City Walmart was disrupted Wednesday afternoon by an alleged bomb threat.
According to the Michigan City Police Department, officers arrived at the Supercenter on Franklin Street at about 3:00 p.m. in response to a possible bomb at the location.
A Porter County Bomb Squad and the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department K9 Division completed a sweep of the store, finding no bomb or credible threat. The Walmart has returned to normal operations.
Continuing the investigation, the Detective Bureau determined that the original threat was the result of a swatting call. Swatting is when someone with ill intent contacts law enforcement about a false emergency at a targeted location, hoping to cause a large-scale response by law enforcement. A number of swatting incidents recently have been directed towards state elected officials.
