(Michigan City, IN) - The kick off to the Christmas season in Michigan City has been expanded to two days of festivities this year.

The celebration begins December 5 with the lighting of the city’s official Christmas tree at 7th and Franklin streets at 6 p.m.    There will be food trucks present along with hot chocolate, a performance by the Marquette High School Chorus and Santa Claus visiting with children starting at 7 p.m.

The huge display of lights at Washington Park will also be turned on that evening and remain on until January 6.

The activities the following day include a Kindlmarket at Barker Hall at 600 Franklin St. and the parade beginning at 5 p.m. on Franklin St. from 4th to 9th streets.  After the parade, there will be the annual chili challenge also at Barker Hall from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  For $5, people can taste chili prepared by the fire and police departments and other local organizations.

Santa will again visit with children to holiday music from the Michigan City High School Treble Chorale & City Singers.

“The Holiday Season is such a big part of our community.  Our goal is to get everyone in the spirit of peace, joy, and community togetherness.” said Director of Special Events, Terry Greetham.
