School Honored for Dedication to Military

(Indianapolis, IN) - Kingsford Heights Elementary School has been awarded a Purple Star School designation by the Indiana Department of Education.

The award given annually is for schools serving a community born from America’s World War II efforts.  The Town of Kingsford Heights was created from homes constructed to house workers at the former Kingsbury Ordnance Plant where ammunition for the military was manufactured.

At its peak, the plant employed more than 20,000 workers.  To earn the designation, school must meet criteria such as appointing a military liaison, maintaining a dedicated web page for military families, offering professional development for staff on the unique challenges of military life and maintaining an effective transition program for incoming military students.

“We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition,” said Kingsford Heights Elementary School Principal Holly Wireman.
