OWI Charge for Hit and Run Driver

(La Porte County, IN) - A man who caused a minor crash and fled near Michigan City was allegedly impaired.  La Porte County Police said Ruben Gonzalez, 57, had a blood alcohol level slightly more than three times the legal limit.

Police said the investigation shows a woman stopped at a traffic light was hit in the rear by Gonzalez Friday afternoon at 850 West and 400 North. It wasn’t long before the fleeing vehicle was located by police at Loves Truck Stop on U.S. 421 just south of Interstate 94.  Police said there were two open containers of beer and vodka in the vehicle’s cup holder.

Gonzalez was arrested for operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, both Class A misdemeanors.  There was just minor damage to both vehicles.  Police said there were also no injuries.
