Man Running in Interstate Hit, Killed by Semi

(Porter County, IN) - An out-of-state man died on the Indiana Toll Road after being hit by a semi.

 

On Thursday at about 12:42 p.m. Indiana State Police were made aware of a man running in and out of traffic on the tollway about one mile east of the Valparaiso/Chesterton exit.

 

On the shoulder of the tollway, ISP said a trooper made contact with the man, an unidentified 36-year-old from St. Charles, MO. After a brief interaction, the man ran into eastbound traffic and was struck by a gray 2019 Volvo semi. According to authorities, the man was not only alert, but combative with police who tried to render medical aid. The man was flown by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

 

A vehicle determined to belong to the deceased male was located approximately a half mile west of the location where he was found walking.

 

Eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road were shut down for about an hour Thursday afternoon for crash reconstruction.

 

The driver of the semi, a 34-year-old from Pikesville, MD, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
