Trespassing Victims Not Helpless

(Michigan City, IN) - Michigan City residents not wanting large gatherings of strangers on their property can have police disperse the crowds.

According to the Michigan City Police Department, a number of residents have expressed concerns and frustration over groups as large as 50 or more people congregating in their yards.

The complaints have included loud music playing at night, people using their lawns as a public restroom and fear about confronting the individuals.

Police said law enforcement under state law can act on behalf of property owners to remove trespassers without the owner being present.

Property owners must first complete a consent form available at the front desk of the police department or from any officer.

“This authorization is designed specifically to help address spontaneous or large-scale gatherings that interfere with private use and public safety,” police said.
