(La Porte County, IN) - A traffic stop by La Porte County Police yesterday turned into a good-sized drug bust.

 

Donyell Mayhew, 45, of Michigan City is charged with Level 2 felony dealing cocaine.

 

Police said he was pulled over before 3 p.m. on Interstate 94 outside Michigan City for following a semi-truck too closely.  A K-9 dog detecting the presence of drugs resulted in the vehicle being searched.

 

During the search, police said Mayhew fled on foot but he was apprehended a short distance away.  Two bags of compressed cocaine were later found in the vehicle, police said.

 

Mayhew was being held in the La Porte County Jail without bond.

 

Police said no bond has been set in the case yet because Mayhew was already out on bond for a previous offense.

 

According to court records, Mayhew was given an eight-year prison sentence in 2021 for possession of methamphetamine.
