Drug Use Alleged in Crash with Injuries

(Michigan City, IN) - A driver blamed for a two vehicle crash with injuries in Michigan City is accused of being impaired.

Fred Washington, 53, of Michigan City is charged with multiple counts including operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police said the investigation shows Washington turned into the path of an oncoming vehicle just before 12 p.m. Sunday at Michigan Boulevard and E. 9th St.

Washington was walking away from the scene of the crash when stopped by police, who found evidence of drug use in his vehicle, police said.

Police said Washington, who exhibited symptoms of using narcotics, had abrasions on his face and possible dislocated shoulder but refused medical attention.

In the other vehicle was a man and his two nephews, who were taken by ambulance complaining of pain.

Washington was also cited for not having a driver’s license and having improper plates and an expired vehicle registration.
