(La Porte County, IN) - A record price was set on Friday during he hog auction at the La Porte County Fair. A male hog shown by a 4-H'er went for $17,000 in the bidding. In comparison, the market price for a hog is about $150.
Farmer Matt Schafer of LaCrosse, who was working the auction, said it’s not unusual for bidders to go way above market price to benefit 4-H youth raising the animals.
“It’s people looking to support the kids not necessarily the merit of the animal,” Schafer said.
The owner of the hog was Madison Scarborough, 16, of LaCrosse.
Schafer said the winning bid was cast by Kraft Auction Service.
The auction was run by Lestinsky Auctioneers out of Hanna.
