Butter Made by Hand at La Porte County Fair

(La Porte County, IN) - A man and his family are making homemade butter at Pioneer Land during the ongoing La Porte County Fair.

Dennis Mann on the front porch of the log cabin takes turns with his wife and granddaughters turning the handle on a butter churn that can hold as much as six quarts of heavy cream.

“They made the last batch of butter,” he said.

Mann said it takes about one hour of manually turning the handle on the antique churn for the cream to turn into butter.  He said it takes another hour or so to remove the whey from the mixture for the butter to be ready to eat.

Mann said the butter is used at Pioneer Land for things like cooking and spreading on crackers given to passersby to taste at no cost.

He didn’t know exactly when the glass butter churn with a metal lid was made but said it was an antique when his wife purchased it about 30 years ago.

He said every three quarts of heavy cream makes about 2.5 lbs. of butter.
