Use of Shotgun Could Bring Hard Prison Time

(Michigan City, IN) - A Michigan City man allegedly fired a shotgun in the direction of two people last evening, and while nobody was injured in the process, he could be facing significant prison time as a result. 

 

Chad Topa has been charged with two counts of Level 1 felony Attempted Murder and two counts of Level 3 felony Attempted Aggravated Battery.

 

According to Michigan City Police, at about 7:30 p.m. officers responded to multiple calls about a verbal argument involving a man armed with a shotgun in the 700 block of Plymouth Court near Gardena Park. The authorities that arrived quickly de-escalated the situation and safely took possession of the shotgun from Topa.

 

The investigation indicates that Topa, while arguing with multiple individuals fired the shotgun toward two people involved in the verbal altercation. Further information involving the dispute was not released.

 

Topa is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on the charges before La Porte Superior Court 1 Judge Jamie Oss on May 28th. He is currently being held on $100,000 bond. Each of the attempted murder counts could bring him anywhere from a 20 to 40-year sentence.  Another 3 to 16-year sentence could result from each of the remaining counts.
