Arrest in Alcohol-related Fatal Crash

(La Porte County, IN) - Charges have been filed for a death that occurred in an alcohol-related motor vehicle crash in La Porte County, as Lashea Bird, 40, has been charged with Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated Causing Death.

 

Police said, in February. she was traveling U.S. 20 when she left the highway and hit a tree at Wilhelm Road. Kendra Murphy, who was a passenger in her vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. A warrant for her arrest was issued on March 1st, but information developed that Bird from South Bend had fled to Texas.

 

She was taken into custody in Texas by a U.S. Marshal’s Service task force on May 7th in the Fort. Worth area. 

 

Currently, Bird is being held in the La Porte County Jail on $20,000 bond, and could face anywhere from a two to 12-year sentence on the Level 4 felony count.
