(La Porte County, IN) - More than 700 customers in NIPSCO’s La Porte service area were still without power this morning following a strong storm yesterday afternoon. The storm produced heavy rain and high winds strong enough in spots to bring down three electrical transmission towers in the area of 500 West and 400 South in Scipio Township.
“They actually crumbled to the ground,” said La Porte resident Mike Kellems, who took pictures of the fallen towers while driving back home from Westville. Kellems also noted that there were many fallen trees and utility poles.
“Scipio Township was definitely the impact point of that storm,” he said.
Warren Smith, who was working at the lakefront in Michigan City when the storm moved through, said there was a lot of rain but the winds were not nearly as strong in that area.
“It really wasn’t bad there close to the lake,” he said.
Smith said he saw a lot of fallen trees after work while driving back to his residence about four miles north of the fallen electrical towers.
According to NIPSCO, 741 of the 900 power outages remaining throughout its entire northern Indiana service area were in the La Porte service area.
