Banned Driver Causes OWI Crash

(La Porte County, IN) - A man with a lifetime ban on his driver’s license was allegedly impaired when he caused a motor vehicle crash in La Porte County.

62-year old Duane Meeks of Michigan City was arrested. Three vehicles were involved in the accident Sunday night on U.S 20 near 300 West.

Meeks was not injured. One of the other drivers sustained a possible broken hand.

According to police, Meeks could not walk a straight line and, during another test where he had to keep a foot elevated while counting to 30, gave up, telling the officer, “just take me to jail.” In addition, his alleged blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.

Police say the charge was upgraded to a Level 6 felony because of two prior drunk driving convictions within the past seven years.
