New Library Expansion to be Celebrated

(La Porte, IN) - A ribbon-cutting is scheduled on a new library facility in La Porte.

The building at 904 Indiana Avenue features advanced manufacturing equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutters.

Classes on using the technology are offered to people exploring career options, updating job skills, and personal enjoyment.

Since June, the facility has been open after the inside of what’s known as the former “Telephone” building erected in 1913 building underwent a $2.7 million renovation and remodeling.

“We’ve had a good variety of people coming through to use this equipment and learn how to use it,” said Jennifer Bissonette, Communication Specialist with the La Porte County Public Library system.

The library’s print and faxing services were also moved into the new facility. Other features include meeting space.

The grand opening celebration is scheduled for October 4th from 5-8 PM.

For several decades, switchboard operators used to work inside the building connecting telephone calls.

The line of work became obsolete when advancements in technology made telephone calls possible without switchboard operators.
