OWI Charges in Sports Car Tree Collision

(La Porte, IN) - A Hawaii man was allegedly impaired when he totaled a sports car. The late Monday night accident happened just outside La Porte.

Police said 35-year-old Benjamin Rivera was southbound on State Road 39 and began accelerating while turning left onto Severs Road. The Dodge Charger leaving more than 200 feet of marks on the pavement, slammed into a tree and came to rest upside down.

The man allegedly fled on foot and showed up at a house occupied by friends on Waverly Road with glass fragments on his clothing.

Police said Rivera was driven back to the crash scene, where investigators were still about one hour later. He was charged after recording an alleged blood alcohol level just slightly below the legal .08-percent limit.

The blood sample was taken about two hours after the crash, police said.
