Charges for Passing School Bus

(La Porte County, IN) - A Michigan City woman has to appear in court for allegedly passing a stopped school bus.

40-year old Charlene Jefferson is charged with Class A misdemeanor reckless driving.

According to La Porte County Police, a child just stepped off the bus when Jefferson drove around it Friday afternoon on Johnson Road near Crichfield Elementary School. The lights on the bus were flashing, and the stop arm extended when Jefferson, who had plenty of time to stop, veered around the bus.

The bus driver was clapping her hands when she saw the officer go after the driver.

Jefferson was given the summons to appear in court to face the charges. She could face up to one year in jail.

Her initial hearing was rescheduled for October 4th after informing the court she was citing a medical reason and would not make her original court date.
