Slicers Fall Short in Sectional Finals

(Plymouth, IN) - La Porte failed in its bid to defend their high school baseball sectional title last evening, as the Slicers lost 6-3 to Mishawaka in the sectional championship game at Plymouth.

Fans went into the game hopeful after the Slicers (18-11) advanced twice with come-from-behind victories.

Voice of the Slicers, Chip Jones, said Mishawaka (15-14) scored four runs in the first inning with help from a fielding error. He said the Slicers hit the ball well, but those balls too often found the gloves of well-positioned defenders.

“Sometimes, there’s just games that it’s almost like the baseball gods say you’re not going to win,” he said.

Chip said Mishawaka came into the game with their best two pitchers having fresh arms from receiving a bye and not throwing in their blowout sectional opener Saturday against Michigan City.

La Porte, on the other hand, had to win twice to reach the finals and used their best three starting pitchers to do it in come-from-behind victories. La Porte trailed 6-1 mid-way through the game when Cody Benedict took the mound and didn’t allow a run the rest of the way.
