Joan L. Hensell

Joan L. Hensell, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

She was born on August 14, 1948, in La Porte to the late Betty (Flitter) and Frank Koekenberg.

Joan shared a beautiful life with her devoted husband, Ricki, and together they built a loving family that meant everything to her. She was a proud and loving mother to her daughter, Michelle (Bill) Didion, and her sons, Daniel (Richole Schultz) Hensell and David (Jenn Cowger) Hensell. Nothing brought Joan greater happiness than her family, especially her beloved grandchildren: Jonathan, Anthony, Marie, and Joseph Didion; Taylor, Austin, Hannah, and Daniel Jr. Hensell; Destiny Avila; Alice Robbins; and Aria Hensell. Becoming a great-grandmother was another special blessing in Joan’s life, one she treasured deeply.

Joan is also survived by her sister, Patricia Breseke, of La Porte. She was preceded by a sister, Jeanne Campbell and a brother Michael Koekenberg.

Throughout her life, Joan gave generously of her time and talents to both her work and her faith community. She was employed in the Composing Room at the Herald-Argus and was a dedicated member of Holy Family Parish. Her commitment to her church extended well beyond attending Mass. She helped organize the Mardi Gras celebration at Holy Family, taught religious education, served as a youth leader, and volunteered with the Funeral Committee.

Her faith was an important part of her life, reflected in the many ways she served and supported others. In her quieter moments, Joan found happiness in quilting and gardening, especially tending to her beloved flowers. Above all, she cherished the time she spent with her family and grandchildren, who were the greatest joy of her life. The love she shared, the memories she created, and the care she gave to those around her will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
