Bernice H. Sherrill, April 1, 1939 - October 5, 2026

Bernice H. Sherrill, 87, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 5:02 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana, with Pastor Geoff Safirt officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral chapel.

Bernice was born April 1, 1939, in Lepanto, Arkansas, to the late Alvin Dickey Tippitt and Tisha Purnell Mitchell. On September 12, 1961, in Arkansas, she married her loving husband, Gary W. Sherrill, who survives in Michigan City.

Also surviving are her five daughters, Debbie (Gary) Cook of Arkansas, Kim (Bill) Lucaitis of Valparaiso, Kari (Dave) Smith of Michigan City, Tabitha Sherrill of Westville, and Brittany (Cody) Sherrill; two sons, Terry Sherrill of Michigan City and Tyler Sherrill of Burns Harbor; four sisters, Sharon Habeck of Virginia, Molly Halsey of Arkansas, Karone Tippitt of Arkansas, and Theresa K. of Arkansas; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her two very special babies, Colson and Callan, whom she loved with every fiber of her being.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her three brothers, Bobby, Herman, and Billy.

Bernice was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love for her family was unwavering. She loved fiercely, and those fortunate enough to know her could feel that love immediately. Her family was the center of her world, and she was always their biggest cheerleader, supporter, and protector. Everything she did came from a place of love and from her desire to make sure those closest to her knew just how deeply they were cherished.

Bernice took great pride in her home and especially enjoyed planting flowers and keeping her yard looking beautiful. She loved a good cup of coffee, enjoyed shopping, and was always happy to make a stop at the Blue Chip whenever she was feeling lucky. She had a strong personality, a determined spirit, and was truly a force to be reckoned with, but behind that strength was an enormous heart devoted to her family.

Bernice wanted nothing more than the very best for those she loved. Her encouragement, strength, humor, and unmistakable presence will be deeply missed. Though her family will feel her absence every day, they take comfort in knowing that their biggest cheerleader is now watching over them from heaven until they are together again.
