Berdell Leon Bales, 88, of Lakeland, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2026.
He was born on December 3, 1937, in Kingsbury, Indiana. Berdell was the son of Leonard Monroe Bales and Florence Edna Sigel Bales. He graduated from Kingsbury High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Army as an Engineer Equipment Mechanic, attaining the rank of Specialist Fourth Class and receiving an Honorable Discharge.
Berdell married Janet Lee Marsh in June 1960, and together they raised four children. He later married Judith Kay “Judy” Wineholt in 1987.
A lifelong farmer, mechanic, and craftsman, Berdell spent much of his life doing what he loved most—working with his hands. He farmed in Indiana for many years before moving to Fort Myers, Florida, where he worked in the boat industry as a mechanic. He later returned to Indiana, where he married Judy in 1987 and enjoyed returning to the farming life he loved while continuing to build and repair anything that needed attention. Following Judy's passing in 2008, Berdell spent his later years with his children in Florida and Georgia, where he continued doing what he loved most—building, repairing, and creating countless projects for his family. Whether woodworking, welding, gardening, repairing engines, or fixing whatever needed attention, he found great satisfaction in honest work. His hands were rarely still, and those who knew him best will remember a man who could build, repair, or improve almost anything.
Berdell was known for his quiet humility, dependability, and strong work ethic. Though he was not one to express his feelings with words, he showed his love through his actions and his willingness to help others. His favorite response to almost any question was simply, "Whatever," a phrase his family will always remember with a smile.
Berdell is survived by his children, Todd (Sherri) Bales, Greg (Genelle) Bales, and Lisa (J.T.) Rieves; his sister, Beverly Gill; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Florence Bales; his wives, Janet and Judy; his son, Jeff; and his sister, Barbara Hoskins.
