William Slater de Funiak, November 30, 1936 - August 17, 2026.

William “Bill” Slater de Funiak, age 89, passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 2026, in Long Beach, Indiana.

Born on November 30, 1936, in San Francisco, California. Bill was the son of William Quinby de Funiak and Eleanor Slater de Funiak.

Bill attended St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco and was immensely proud to return for his 70th reunion in 2024. He graduated from the University of San Francisco (class of 1962), remaining a loyal supporter of Dons basketball.

In 1959, Bill met Barbara Ward. They married in 1961 at St. Anne’s Church in the Sunset District of San Francisco, the same church where they celebrated their 50th anniversary. They relocated back to the Midwest in 1972, settling in Hinsdale, Barbara’s home town, where they spent many happy years and raised their three children.  Their marriage was a partnership of love, humor, and shared purpose until Barbara’s passing in 2012.

Together, Bill and Barbara raised three children; Katherine (deceased), married to Kent Buell, and mother to Liam (Keara), Griffin (Shantal), and Grace; Andrew, married to Stephen Stabile; David, father to Finn and Maddie.

Bill began his professional life at IBM, and later became a principal at de Funiak & Edwards, helping companies find IT professionals during the early years of the industry’s explosive growth. Bill’s most impactful public service came as the elected Clerk Treasurer of Long Beach, a position he held from 2012 to 2022. He approached the role with integrity, dedication, and genuine affection for the community he served. The friendships he formed during those years were among the most meaningful of his life.

Bill was an avid duplicate bridge player and a proud member of the American Contract Bridge League, achieving the rank of Silver Life Master. He served as a certified Club Director and was the longtime Manager and Director of the Long Beach Duplicate Club. He also loved crossword puzzles, Cubs baseball, and the camaraderie of the Union League Club of Chicago.

His volunteer work included contributions to Habitat for Humanity and PFLAG, reflecting his commitment to service, inclusion, and community.

Bill is survived by his sons Andrew and David, his grandchildren, and his sister Olivia de Funiak-Fox (Jack).

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara, his daughter Katherine, his brother Frederick de Funiak (Terri), and many cherished family members and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 28, 2026, at Mary Mother of Mercy Catholic Parish -  Notre Dame Campus , 1010 Moore Road, Long Beach, IN, with  Rev. Daniel Rabb officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 am - 11:00 am, on Friday at the church.
