Janice R. Lockhart, age 95, a lifelong resident of La Porte, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Miller's Health & Rehab in La Porte.
Born on January 4, 1931, in La Porte, Janice was the daughter of the late Chandler and Rose (Crane) Piper. On June 26, 1948, she married the love of her life, Lyle C. Lockhart. Together they shared nearly 54 years of marriage before his passing on June 11, 2002, a lifetime built on love, devotion, and unwavering commitment.
Janice dedicated more than 40 years of her life to Howmet in La Porte, where she worked as an Assembly Line Inspector. She was admired for her strong work ethic, keen attention to detail, and steadfast determination.
Those who knew Janice will remember her spirited personality. She was feisty, fiercely independent, and never afraid to speak her mind. Her direct and honest nature was balanced by a wonderful sense of humor, and she delighted in telling jokes that brought smiles to those around her. Beneath her straightforward exterior was a deeply caring heart. She lovingly looked after the neighborhood cats, always making sure they were fed and cared for, and she found great joy in helping others whenever she could.
A woman of deep faith, Janice was a longtime member of the Church of Christ in La Porte. Although she stopped attending services during the COVID pandemic, her faith remained a guiding presence throughout her life. She was also passionate about healthy living and became remarkably knowledgeable about vitamins and nutrition, always eager to share what she had learned with family and friends.
Janice had a lifelong fascination with her family's history and devoted countless hours to researching her genealogy. She took great pride in preserving her family's story and was an invaluable source of knowledge about generations past.
Above all else, Janice cherished her family. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, resilience, and unwavering love that will continue to live on through those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her son, Lyle L. Lockhart (Janis); two granddaughters, Jackie Taylor (Josh) and Leslie Gianni (Jacob); two step-grandchildren, Heather Lockhart and Sean Lockhart; five great-grandchildren, Jordan Taylor, Hayden Taylor, Desta Lockhart (Quinn Burgyone), Dominic Gianni, and Andrew Gianni; four great-great-grandchildren, Miles Gianni, Margo Gianni, Kian Burgyone, and Colby Burgyone; and one brother, Alan Piper.
Janice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lyle C. Lockhart; her parents, Chandler and Rose Piper; one granddaughter, Jenny Lockhart; two sisters; and eight brothers.
Honoring Janice's wishes, all services will be private.
Though Janice's candid honesty and independent spirit were among her most defining traits, those fortunate enough to know her also experienced her kindness, loyalty, and quiet compassion. Her devotion to her family, her faith, and the simple joys of life leaves a lasting legacy that will be treasured and remembered for generations to come.
