Barbara Jean Freudenburg DeVries, 89, of Michigan City, passed away peacefully at 7:45 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at AVIVA in Valparaiso.
She was born October 29,1936, in Chicago, to Carl and Cora Lee (Jordan) Freudenberg.
She was the wife of Frederick DeVries Jr. who preceded her in death. They were married 71 years. They were the long-time owners of DeVries Tire Company in Michigan City.
Barb last worked for the State of Indiana in the Offices of the Prison. Barb was active with the Evergreen Baptist Church & The Red Hats Ladies Association. She was a regular volunteer at the Michigan City Senior Center. She was an avid seamstress and reader. Barb was known for her sense of humor among the staff & residents at Aviva Assisted Living of Valparaiso where she spent her last 19 months.
She is survived by her son, Bruce (Deb) DeVries; a sister, Christine Fogle, who is presently 104 years old; grandchildren, Tony (Jessica) DeVries, Kevin (Robin) DeVries, Austin DeVries, Kelsie (Robert Willette) DeVries, Craig (Heather Strauss) DeVries, Emily (Josh Layman) DeVries, Stacie (Del) Campbell & Family; great-grandchildren, Cassidy (Billie) Mourer, Tristan (Quincy Henson) DeVries, Megan DeVries, Cooper DeVries, Zoey DeVries, Gia DeVries, Madelyn Merkner , Vincent DeVries, Sterling Willette, Harper DeVries, and Astrid Thurman; a great-great-grandson, Atticus Jacob Kent; step-grandchildren, Noah Strauss, Kevin Shivley, and Hailey Shivley; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; sons, Daryl and David; daughter-in-law, Vicky; and a grandson, Christopher; four sisters; and three brothers.
Cremation will take place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, 219-362-3100 is caring for the arrangements. There will be a memorial gathering from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Friday, July 24, 2026 with Pastor Jon Rumley speaking at 11:30 p.m. at Evergreen Baptist Church, 2005 Coolspring Ave, Trail Creek, IN 46360. Pianist Denise D'Anglis will also be performing.
Barbara’s entire family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to Dunes Hospice of Porter County for all their love and caring.
Barbara was loved by many and will be very missed!
