John Paul Zupko, Sr.
John Paul Zupko, Sr., age 79, of LaPorte, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, June 14, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Born on May 24, 1947, in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, John lived a life defined by dedication, hard work, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. Following his graduation from high school in 1965, he answered the call to serve his country, proudly enlisting in the United States Army. As a member of the distinguished 173rd Airborne Division, John served during the Vietnam War and earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Parachute Badge in recognition of his courageous service.
On April 20, 1985, John married the love of his life, Renee. Their love story began while they were both employed at a Veterans Hospital in Pennsylvania, where they first met and built a foundation of friendship, respect, and lasting devotion.
Throughout his life, John was the very definition of a hardworking provider. A true jack-of-all-trades, he worked in maintenance, manufacturing, and truck driving, approaching every job with determination and pride. He was known for his strong work ethic, his toughness, and a stubborn streak that those who loved him came to appreciate as part of what made him uniquely John. Beneath that rugged exterior was a man whose smile came easily and whose happiness was contagious.
Above all else, John cherished his family. He was a devoted father who took great pride in his six children and the lives they built. Whether offering guidance, lending a helping hand, or simply being present, he was the kind of father whose love was steadfast and unconditional.
John remained deeply connected to his fellow veterans throughout his life. He was a proud member of the local VFW and American Legion and could often be found marching alongside his fellow servicemen and women in the Fourth of July parade, honoring the freedoms for which they had sacrificed so much.
When he wasn't working or spending time with family, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved hunting, tending to his garden, and preparing meals for those he loved. His homemade pizzas became a cherished family tradition, bringing everyone together around the table. He was also an avid animal lover, finding companionship and comfort in the many animals he cared for throughout his life.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Ashley Wiltfong (Steven), John Paul Zupko, Jr., Nicholas Zupko (Carissa), Brianna Zupko (Darren Lovins), Cody Zupko, and Cassara Zupko; his many beloved grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Joyce Munson; and his special friends, Dwight Guider and Charles Williams.
John's legacy is one of service, strength, perseverance, and love. He lived with purpose, worked tirelessly for his family, and never lost the pride he carried as a veteran, husband, father, and friend. Though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
In accordance with John's wishes, all funeral services will be private.
